Dado rails are also known as picture rails. They were introduced so that people could rest their framed photos on them across their wall. These days however interior designers have used them to split the wall and to create two sections of colour and interest.
We would recommend that you choose oak for your picture rail / dado rail because the finish is of much better quality than using mdf because of the profiling.
Some people even use architraves for their dado rails however this is a little cheat way of doing it, and keeps the matching with the skirting boards.
